Since the beginning of 2025, Swiss International Institute Lausanne (SIIL) has been actively developing its research program. The institute is expanding its capabilities and growing beyond an educational institution into a fully fledged research institute.
One strand of the program involves SIIL students in the research work of leading scientific centers and universities such as CERN, PSI, EPFL and ETH — both in Switzerland and beyond. SIIL staff take an active part in research and development within internal projects and as consultants for external companies and organizations.
Affordable medical accelerators and the FLASH effect
In 2025 SIIL is taking part in the development of future affordable medical accelerators for radiation therapy and is exploring the potential of the FLASH effect. This technology could transform radiotherapy by enabling effective cancer treatment with affordable solutions and making such methods more widely available worldwide.
SIIL's Director of Research, Dr. Alexander Malyzhenkov, an expert in beam dynamics in linear electron accelerators, leads the project research in cooperation with international partners. Several advanced medical facilities are planned in the near future in Switzerland and France, capable of delivering ultra-high dose rates using VHEE (Very High Energy Electron) beams.
A new physics program
Alongside its current research initiatives, SIIL is preparing to expand its educational activities and will soon launch a new physics program. An important part of this new academic initiative will be training a new generation of accelerator physicists, engineers and operators — specialists in high demand as more and more medical facilities adopt accelerator technologies.
